As we age our skin tends to lose its youthful glow. This is particularly more common in people who smoke. This effect can be worsened in people who also like to sunbathe either in natural sunlight or a sun-bed. The consequence of this can lead to premature ageing of the skin. The overall appearance of the skin can be improved by a series of
chemical skin peels. These work by removing old and dead cells from the surface of the skin and stimulating the production of new fresh cells from the deeper layers of the skin, creating
younger-looking skin.
As well as causing increased pigmentation in the skin, excess exposure to either sunlight or use of a sun-bed or sun-lamp will lead to signs of ageing of the skin. Indeed many of the signs attributed to ageing are actually manifestations of sun damage.
Chemical skin peels should also help remove some of the excess pigmentation on
sun-damaged skin, as well as stimulating the production of collagen in the skin to smooth out some of the fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment works particularly well on the face and hands and can also be used on other parts of the body.
A variety of factors can cause an increase in the pigmentation in the skin. These include excess exposure to sunlight or sun beds, ageing, pregnancy and the contraceptive pill. Depending on the size and location of these pigmented lesions,
skin pigmentations
can be very disfiguring and detract from your skin's natural beauty.
Active acne which is producing numerous spots and pustules can be treated with a series of chemical skin peels to calm down the infection. If this is occurring in younger people, it has a tendency to recur and hence several courses of chemical skin peels may be required in order to treat it, if it recurs, over a number of years. One of the long term consequences of acne, is that it may result in scarring. By having a chemical skin peel the scar can be reduced. It is generally best to have the
acne scars
treated once all of the disease activity has been low or absent for several months.
